Job Description

Down to Earth works primarily outdoors throughout the year to engage people in arts and culture on their doorstep. This brief intends to support us to be more accessible and sustainable as we programme a variety of events in Wigan’s green spaces. We are looking for a designer to create the following:

1. Re-usable Festival Signposts (budget £3000)

  • Bright and eye-catching, these signposts will help people to find the things they need on site. We imagine they might look like finger posts, though we are open to other options
  • They would need to be fully modular so that regularly required signage (toilets, first aid, etc.) can be integrated alongside customisable signs for artworks specific to each event. Signs need to be able to point in any direction
  • Must be able to be used on hardstanding (including appropriate ballast/weights) and on uneven ground
  • No element can be longer than two metres and storage/ transport space is limited so some element of disassembly would be ideal
  • The signs should come with some of Down to Earth’s humour and creativity in built (without compromising usability)

2. Pop-up Quiet Space (budget £5000)

  • This space is for people who might need some time away from the rest of the event, it needs to be full of comfortable places to sit, lie and lounge
  • Fully equipped: blankets, fidget toys, ear defenders and colouring activities give people a chance to engage lightly
  • This pop up needs to be as comfortable in a field as it is in a library. It needs to have shelter, lighting and flooring that are in keeping with the aesthetic of the space
  • Beautifully calm, looks are important; we want this experience to feel as high quality as anything else we’d bring. This could include some decorative, light sensory or interactive elements but the primary focus must remain on being a quiet space

Designer Fee: £3250 (approximately 10 days of work)

Fabrication Budget (external or internal): £8000 (including delivery)

Total Project Budget: £11,250
