Founded in 1882, The Royal College of Music (RCM) is a world leading music conservatoire with a prestigious history and contemporary outlook. The Deputy Head of Strings (Upper Strings) is a key role in the College and will work alongside the Head of Strings and Assistant Head of Strings (Lower Strings) to continue to develop the world-leading teaching and learning of the Faculty.
They will play a key role in orchestral and ensemble string playing at the RCM through teaching, coaching, leading auditions and student placements.
They will be recognised for their experience at the highest levels of orchestral performance and, as a respected violin teacher, will develop their own class of violin students.
This post is offered on a permanent, part-time basis (0.6FTE) and is available from January 2027.

Salary: Grade 9, £55,911 – £64,068 pro rata, per annum. Appointments will normally be made to the first point of the grade.

Job Requirements
– Master’s degree in performance or equivalent professional experience
– International experience and profile as an orchestral musician
– A track record of success as a teacher of violin at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
– Detailed knowledge of repertoire with the ability to identify potential and make articulate, well-grounded judgements and assessments
– Detailed knowledge of orchestral repertoire and ability to lead violin sectionals and if appropriate tutti strings sessions.
– Demonstrable experience of teaching or coaching in higher education and knowledge of the conservatoire learning environment
– A strong understanding of professional performing contexts, including industry organisations, networks and opportunities
– Efficient and deadline-focused administrator
– Strong IT skills
– Excellent communication, orally and in writing
– Experience as an examiner, especially at HE level
– Ability to relate well to students and colleagues
– Ability to take a strategic overview
