ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Two Truths

Job Summary

This is a paid learning opportunity for an early-career or emerging director who wants to get inside a devising process at an experimental, technology-led theatre project.

Job Description

Project Overview
Two Truths is an immersive audio experiment investigating how people perceive, believe, and contest truth in an era of misinformation. Audiences share the same physical space but hear divergent versions of the same event through binaural sound delivered via bone-conducting headphones.

This R&D phase, supported by Immersive Arts, will prototype and test the concept at Sheffield Theatres in June 2026.

You will work alongside Lead Artists Rob Watt and Bethany Wells across both Sheffield Theatres development weeks, contributing to the creative process in the room and gaining direct experience of how immersive, audience-centred performance is made from the ground up.

You do not need to have directed professionally before. We are looking for someone with a genuine curiosity about devised and experimental work, who is hungry to learn, collaborative by instinct, and ready to be genuinely useful in the room. Some experience of performance, theatre-making, or creative facilitation would be helpful, but we are more interested in your engagement with ideas than your CV.

This is a Sheffield-based opportunity. We are particularly keen to hear from artists living or working in Sheffield and South Yorkshire who want to develop their practice in a supported environment.

Fee:
Total Fee: £900 (based on 6 days @ £150 per day ).

This role is Sheffield-based and does not include accommodation support, though this can be discussed if needed. Travel expenses will be fully reimbursed.

Job Requirements

You do not need a formal directing credit or professional experience to apply. We are looking for:

– A genuine interest in devising, experimental, or immersive performance.
– Curiosity about how stories work, how audiences experience things, and how technology can shape live performance.
– The ability to be genuinely present and attentive in a room; listening well, observing carefully, responding thoughtfully.
– Collaborative instincts and the confidence to contribute your perspective without needing to lead.
– A commitment to inclusive, accessible, and audience-centred work.
Reliability, good communication, and the ability to hold space for a group.

Experience in any of the following would be a bonus but is not required: previous R&D experience in any capacity, drama facilitation, applied theatre, drama school training.
