Job Summary

Do you have experience working with young children and families? We’re looking for a freelance Outdoor Play Facilitator to design and deliver a programme of nature-based work workshops for families with children under 5 at the Gunpowder Mills.

Job Description

Fee: £3,000 fixed fee (70-84 hours to be negotiated depending on your day rate)

Time commitment: Approximately 10-12 working days (including site visit, planning, resource preparation, workshop delivery, and light-touch evaluation)

Materials budget: £1,000 (in addition to the freelance fee, for workshop resources and materials)

Delivery period: July-September 2026 (most workshops expected July-August)

Location: Gunpowder Mills, Beaulieu Drive, Waltham Abbey, Essex, EN9 1JY.
The role includes one initial site visit and on-site delivery of workshops. All planning, preparation, and resource development can be carried out remotely, with flexible working arrangements.

We’re looking for a freelance Outdoor Play Facilitator to design and deliver a programme of nature-based workshops for families with children under 5 at the Gunpowder Mills.

Job Requirements

Essential
Experience designing and delivering activities for children aged 0-5 and their families
Confidence planning and leading sessions independently
Experience facilitating groups in outdoor settings
Strong communication and engagement skills with both children and adults
Good organisational skills and the ability to manage resources, planning, and session logistics
A flexible approach and the ability to adapt activities to participants’ interests and needs
An interest in outdoor play, creativity, and helping children connect with the natural world
Desirable
Experience of nature-based learning, outdoor play, forest school, environmental education, or similar approaches
Experience adapting activities to support children with SEND or additional access needs
Experience working with diverse family and community audiences
Relevant qualifications or training in early years, outdoor learning, play, education, or a related field
