Job Description

The Exhibitions and Interpretation Manager leads the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of the exhibitions and interpretation programme at Wentworth Woodhouse, a Grade I listed historic house. The role ensures high-quality, accessible and engaging visitor experiences, delivered on time, within budget and in line with the Trust’s Cultural Strategy.
Working with the Head of Culture and Engagement, the postholder designs the annual exhibitions programme, overseeing research, content development, audience focus, sourcing loans and managing all practical arrangements including contracts, transport, insurance, environmental conditions and installation. The role coordinates internal teams and external partners, manages risk, ensures maintenance of displays and evaluates exhibitions to inform future planning.
The postholder also leads the development of interpretation for the House and Gardens, including written interpretation, tours, guidebooks and digital content, ensuring a consistent and engaging visitor offer. They line manage the Head House Guide and Researcher and support programming and community engagement linked to exhibitions.
Additional responsibilities include overseeing volunteer research and archive cataloguing activity, contributing to funding applications and reporting, supporting income generation through the exhibitions offer, and maintaining strong sector partnerships. The role acts as an ambassador for the Trust and ensures compliance with health and safety, risk management and organisational procedures. Hours are 37.5hrs per week, based on a 50 week year.

Job Requirements

Proven experience delivering exhibitions in the arts, museum or heritage sector, including managing budgets, schedules, installations and loans. Strong knowledge of interpretation and audience engagement, with experience producing written, guided and digital interpretation for diverse visitors. A degree in arts, heritage or a related field is essential, alongside understanding of sector standards, collections care, evaluation and health and safety. Excellent communication, organisation and project management skills are required, with the ability to build effective relationships with artists, partners, contractors and volunteers. Experience of community engagement, working with collections and archives is essential; line management and grant funding experience is desirable. Applicants must be flexible, reliable and able to work evenings and weekends, with a strong interest in heritage, art and visitor experience.
