Collections Curator

The Cartoon Museum

Job Summary

We are hiring a Collections Curator to join us on a fulltime, fixed term contract to 31 December 2027. This is an exciting opportunity to lead our exhibitions programme, manage a collections move and deliver a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant.

Job Description

In December 2024, we received a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a three-year project (ending 31 December 2027). This funding is essential to: create a touring exhibition, catalogue and improve the conditions of our collections, upskill staff and volunteers and develop an exciting forward exhibitions programme. It also has sparked our need to move our off-site collections into more suitable longer storage and re-launch our In-Focus programme of smaller and more regularly changing displays.

The postholder will deliver the Heritage Fund project and be responsible for the care of the Cartoon Museum’s collection and library, including documentation, conservation, research, interpretation and development. You will be responsible for acquisitions in consultation with the Director and trustees.

We are looking for a candidate with knowledge and experience in collections care within a Museum or Archive or relating to similar cultural collections and the skills to deliver projects successfully.

This is a fixed term contract to 31 December 2027 to complete the grant funded project; however, there is the possibility to extend.

Job Requirements

You will be responsible for the care of the Museum’s collection and library, including documentation, conservation, research, interpretation and development. You will be responsible for acquisitions in consultation with the Director and trustees.

You will be responsible for delivering a Heritage Fund project including: managing a touring exhibition, developing temporary exhibitions and displays, coordinating a collections move and leading in collections documentation and updating our collections care practices.

You will be responsible for concept and delivery of exhibitions and contribute to publications and any learning, outreach and participation programmes.

You will build and nurture relationships leading to acquisitions and loans for exhibitions and the collection, as well as generally among cartoonists and collectors.

The postholder will be an on-site keyholder and undertake general duties relating to front of house operations, including Duty Managing via a rota.
