Job Description
Members of the Kids in Museums Board are from a range of backgrounds and are based across the UK. You can find out more about our current Trustees https://kidsinmuseums.org.uk/who-we-are/trustees/ – here.
Our Trustees have overall responsibility for the running of Kids in Museums. This includes:
- setting our strategic direction,
- ensuring we spend money to have most impact,
- monitoring risks to the charity,
- making sure we comply with relevant laws and regulations.
As a Young Trustee you will:
- Attend four board meetings per year.
- Join a subcomittee.
- Get involved in other Kids in Museums programmes such as the Family Friendly Museum Award.
- Work with the Kids in Museums Youth Panel,
We don’t expect you to have any prior experience of being a Trustee or how charities are run. We will offer:
Induction
- Online training that provides an overview of the role of the Trustee.
- Learning to read board papers.
- Learning to understand financial documents.
- Training to support confidence in meetings including public speaking.
Ongoing support
- A buddy/mentor from among current Trustees. They will help you prepare for Board meetings and provide other support as required.
- Opportunity to take part in other training as required.
- Support from staff team.
- Opportunity to work with the Kids in Museums Youth Panel to develop ideas and gather feedback for Board meetings.
All training is free,
We will pay expenses for attending meetings and Kids in Museums events.
The time commitment for the role is about four hours per month to attend meetings, prepare papers and participate in other Kids in Museums initiatives.
Being a Youth Trustee is a great way to learn new skills, understand leadership in a small charity and find out more about the UK museum sector.
Job Requirements
Key aspects of the role include:
Attending Board meetings four times a year
- These are a mixture of in person and online meetings. We will cover expenses for attending in person meetings and ensure they are in accessible venues.
- Board meetings generally include a mixture of discussions about fundraising, finance, risks to the charity and the performance of our programmes for the museum sector alongside future strategy.
- Discussions in Board meetings are confidential and it’s important that all Trustees respect this.
Joining a subcommittee
- We have three subcommittees: Business Development, Finance and Inclusivity and Relevance.
- They meet online four times per year.
- Participating in a subcommittee is optional, but it is a good opportunity to learn more about a specific area of Kids in Museums work.
Participating in other Kids in Museums activities
- Be a judge for the Family Friendly Museum Award and/or attend the Award ceremony.
- Visit a Takeover Day.
- Represent Kids in Museums
