Job Summary

The Prime Minister wishes to appoint three new Trustees who can drive forward the ongoing transformation of the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) into a multi-site family of museums and champion the UK’s vibrant creative industries.

Job Description

Number of vacancies: 3
Time commitment: 1 day per month
Length of term: 4 years
Application deadline: Midday on 16 November 2026
Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

The Role of Trustees

The Board of Trustees of the V&A is the statutory body which is responsible for the Museum and its collections under the terms of the National Heritage Act 1983. The main functions of the Board are:
To care for, preserve and add to the objects in the collections;
To secure that the objects are exhibited to the public;
To secure that the objects are available to persons seeking to inspect them in connection with study or research;
To generally promote the public’s enjoyment and understanding of art, design and performance, both by means of the Board’s collections and by such means as they consider appropriate.

Time Commitment: The role involves attending five Board meetings per year, typically 2.5 hours long, and an annual away day. Trustees serve on at least one Trustee Sub-Committee of the Board according to their specialism. These Committees generally meet four times a year. Additional time would be required to study papers and attend events at the Museum. From time to time, Trustees may be called upon to provide adhoc advice and support.

Location: Board meetings are held in person at V&A sites across London (South Kensington, Bethnal Green, Hackney Wick or Stratford), with an annual away day that may occur outside of London. The organisation requires in-person attendance for board meetings to ensure Trustees can fully participate in viewings and presentations.

Job Responsibilities

Essential criteria

– Knowledge: a clear understanding of the work, priorities and challenges of the V&A and the context within which it operates.

– Communication: strong communication skills with the ability to contribute at board level and the ability to listen, accept challenges and constructively challenge others in discussions with clarity and respect.

– Judgement: effective decision-making skills with the ability to critically analyse a wide range of information to make clear and objective evidence-based recommendations to support the delivery of the V&A’s objectives.

– Collaboration: ability to work closely with other board members and other key stakeholders, providing support, constructive challenge and assurance as appropriate.

– Inclusion: a demonstrable commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion; factoring nationwide perspectives and enhancing opportunities for all communities into decision making.
