Job Summary

The Sound No.2 is responsible for the maintenance and operation of sound equipment and instruments and is responsible for maintaining an accurate and appropriate sound image of the production as specified. They will also be responsible for stepping up and mixing the show when required.

Job Description

  • Support and deputise for the Sound No.1 in all aspects of the sound department
  • Work collaboratively with other departments, to ensure the smooth running of the show
  • Work alongside and support the No1 on the weekly venue load outs
  • To ensure all sound equipment is cleaned and daily sound checks completed to ensure equipment is in working order for each performance
  • To ensure that mics are in working order for each performance and to fit and change mics as required
  • In collaboration with the Sound No.1 to coordinate the supply of all equipment and consumables required to run the show within budget as approved by the Company/General Manager
  • To keep sound reference/cue sheets up to date and accurate
  • When required, to operate the sound systems for performances as scheduled by the Sound No.1 and as instructed by the Sound No.1/Sound Designer, to ensure the Sound Designer’s original specification and sound of the production is maintained
  • To liaise with the Company Manager/Resident Artistic staff regarding daily cast changes and prepare the sound equipment changes accordingly
  • Deal with emergency repairs and fixes to sound equipment and programmes
  • Recognise where maintenance work needs to be carried out/replacements are required for non-consumable and rented equipment to bring this to the attention of the Sound No.1 so this may be scheduled to ensure no show delays
  • Must manage and take ownership of all aspects of instrument maintenance
  • Ensure that security, safety and good housekeeping procedures for the department are properly carried out
  • Comply with the Manager’s Health and Safety and other policies at all times
  • Support on all pre production prep, managing the kit, logistics and the freelance staff.

Job Requirements

  • Communicate well with other crew members and be able to produce the required effects
  • Work well under pressure: be able to concentrate in a live environment
  • Understanding of repairing and re – stringing instruments
  • Knowledge of sound equipment
  • Understanding of the industry: have a strong understanding of how touring theatre works
  • Health and safety: be knowledgeable about and able to abide by relevant health and safety laws when using electrical equipment
