Job Description
The Retail Manager position is a new role for Gainsborough’s House. You will lead an experienced team of Retail Assistants, look after buying and stock management, source new products from local artisans and craftspeople, cultivate new retail opportunities, and make a key contribution to visitor experience. The role will involve working on the shop floor as well as in the museum’s offices, with some weekend work expected (we anticipate one weekend in three, as part of a rota).
This opportunity would suit somebody with a proactive, can-do attitude, who enjoys working with the public and who can spot opportunities where others may not. We are open to meeting candidates taking their first step-up into management, returning to work after a break, or seeking part-time work in support of other commitments.

Salary: £25,600 (£32,000 FTE)
Hours: 28 per week, worked over 4 days
Pension: 8% employer contribution
Holidays: 25 days pro rata + allowance for bank holidays
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer
Line-managing: Retail Assistants x 2
Job Requirements
Who we are looking for
Essential
- At least 2 years’ experience in a comparable retail environment
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Solid numerical skills, including proven experience of cash and stock management
- Confidence with new IT and digital systems
- Demonstrable experience of working well within a team
- High levels of integrity, diplomacy and confidentiality
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to inspire co-workers to reach their potential
- Ability to manage and deploy resources appropriately
- A genuine interest in art and heritage
- Flexibility for some weekend and bank holiday work as part of a rota
- A friendly and helpful can-do attitude
Desirable
- Experience of working in arts or heritage contexts
- Experience of leading a stock take
- Experience of KCPOS/Visisoft systems
- Knowledge of Suffolk’s communities of artists and/or artisanal food producers
