Mural Commission for Green Spaces Shared Places – Going Places

Sunderland Culture

Job Summary

We are seeking to commission an artist to work with young people and the project teams to collaboratively design and install a mural on an outdoor structure/s at Rainton Meadows as part of the Green Spaces, Shared Places project. Fee is £3000 Estimated 50 hours work

Job Description

This mural commission is focused around the Rainton Meadows Nature Park strand of the project. The artist will work with the Rainton Meadows Conservation Rangers (14-18-year-olds), the Durham Wildlife Trust team, the Rainton community and the Green Spaces, Shared Places team to collaboratively design and install a mural on an outdoor structure or structures at Rainton Meadows.

When the Green Spaces, Shared Places touring exhibition tours to Sunderland in March 2027, Rainton Meadows will be part of the exhibition trail. The indoor exhibition will be installed at Houghton Library and outdoor exhibition content will be placed throughout Rainton Meadows in the form of listening posts/seating where oral histories will be installed. It is envisioned that audiences will be encouraged to start their engagement with the exhibition at either Houghton Library or Rainton Meadows and using interactive content be guided between the two sites to fully explore the exhibition.

Additionally, a film we have commissioned will also be installed at Rainton Meadows in a permanent structure already installed at the site, The Den. The Den is a shipping container structure that was installed several years ago and is used for a variety of activities, with a particular focus on children and young people. It is hoped that in engaging the Rainton Meadows Conservation Rangers (14-18-year-olds) as part of this mural project, they will feel a sense of ownership over the structure.

This commission is to design and install mural work on the outside of the Den and potentially the fencing surrounding the small deck. The mural work should be installed on the front aspect of the Den structure only as the sides are not accessible to the public.
