The Virtual Museum
In 2023 we launched the https://www.paralympicheritage.org.uk/global-virtual-museum – Global Virtual Museum, a digital gallery, showcasing the history of the Paralympics, alongside the heritage of National Disability Sport Organisations, and disability histories found in regional museums and SEND schools. Since 2023 we have collaborated with partners to collect, record, digitise and interpret these stories for an online and in-person audience.
- In 2023-4 we worked with British Blind Sport and in 2024-5 with CP Sport and will be working with Dwarf Sport Association UK in 2025
- We have worked with schools and museums in Buckinghamshire and Hampshire to create regional galleries and in 2025 will be working in east London
- Our international galleries have covered Japan and Italy and in 2025 we are focusing on the early international Games held at Stoke Mandeville
Aim
Deeper and more widespread engagement in the Global Virtual Museum – and the rich disability sport heritage that it celebrates – by KS2 aged children.
Objectives
- To identify strong curriculum links for KS2
- To create an self-guided visit to the global virtual museum, that works across the galleries, with appropriate supporting resources and pre and post visit information
- All resources to be produced in an accessible format
- To identify props or tactile materials that could be purchased to form a small handling box that schools could borrow, to complement the self-guided visit
Timetable
- We would like the resource to be developed in September
- Piloting in October
- Amends in late October
- Delivery of resource early November
- NPHT launch of resource in November, to tie in with National Disability History Month in November-December
Budget
£1,200, estimated as 4 days work at £300 per day.
This work is supported by Arts Council England, Esm e Fairburn Collections Fund delivered by the Museums Association, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Rothschild Foundation, the Wolfson Foundation and Mitsubishi Corporation (London Branch).

The development of an accessible resource for KS2, linked to the curriculum, which can be used as a self-guided resource by teachers.
Resources
- The contents of the virtual gallery, which comprises eight galleries (including two foreign language galleries)
- Complementary informal learning resources, video tours and screen readable versions of the galleries’ content
- The research developed to support the contents of the galleries
- Knowledge and understanding of the delivery team
