Yorkshire Lead Technician (Freelance)
Contract: Nov 2025 – April 2026
Fee: £220 per day
Hours: Approx. 12 days per month, 9am-5pm (with some flexibility)
Hospital Rooms is an arts and mental health charity that commissions extraordinary artworks for NHS mental health hospitals across the UK. We are looking for an experienced Lead Technician to support the delivery of our project at Fieldhead Hospital in Wakefield and Kendray Hospital in Barnsley, in partnership with South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
The Lead Technician will be responsible for the technical planning, coordination and installation of 15 new artworks by internationally recognised artists, ensuring museum and gallery standards are met across all installations. You will work closely with the Hospital Rooms team, artists and NHS staff, leading installation teams and ensuring that each space is completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
Key responsibilities:

Lead and coordinate installation teams across hospital sites

Install artworks and manage technical requirements

Ensure compliance with all Health & Safety and safeguarding procedures

Liaise with artists, Hospital Rooms staff and NHS partners on technical planning

Advise on materials, fixings and installation methods suited to clinical environments

Maintain a respectful and organised working environment
Person specification:

Proven experience in technical installation within galleries, museums or public art projects

Knowledge of safe working practices and Health & Safety requirements

Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
-
Ability to work collaboratively, flexibly and with care in sensitive environments

Job Requirements
Extensive knowledge of installation methods, materials and tools
A clear understanding of different types of paints, varnishes, coatings and fixings
Knowledge of various materials and how they should be handled
Experience of working in galleries/ museums/artist studios
Comprehensive knowledge on art handling techniques
Attention to detail coupled with a calm and considered approach to problem solving
Working well with others, a collaborative approach to working
Empathy and sensitivity to the needs of our community
Undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check arranged by Hospital Rooms. Please note a previous criminal record does not automatically exclude you from this role
Undertake Hospital Rooms’ site orientation and demonstrate a proven understanding of our safeguarding policies
PASMA or other relevant qualifications are desirable but not essential
Current or former resident of the local area
Ability to travel to and from Barnsley and Wakefield
