Job Description
We are looking to take on board a small team of enthusiastic History of Science Curatorial Research volunteers. This position will support the processing and dissemination of unique historical data about our world-class collection of marine chronometers, many of which were tested here during the Royal Observatory’s working life. Making this data publicly accessible will help bring these objects to life for both visitors and researchers.
This is a voluntary position which is suitable for history enthusiasts with a strong interest in detailed records and data.

Time Commitment:
- 1 day a week in the office, either Tuesdays or Wednesdays, 10am-4pm.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an informal chat with our Curator, First Light over Microsoft Teams.
Please note, we can only take on volunteers who are 18+.
Job Requirements
What we’re looking for in you:
- Enthusiasm for the history of science and/or maritime history
- Ability to work efficiently, while maintaining good attention to detail
- Excellent computer and data entry skills, especially the use of spreadsheets
- Ability to work methodically and independently
- Knowledge of GDPR or a willingness to learn
