Job Description
Sound Operation and Maintenance
Oversee all sound requirements for the production, including show operation, fault-finding and live troubleshooting.
Operate the sound desk during performances and rehearsals as required.
Maintain, test and monitor all sound equipment, including PA systems, radio microphones, playback systems and communications.
Carry out daily system checks, line checks and RF coordination prior to each performance.
Ensure clear, balanced and consistent audio levels for both cast and audience throughout the tour.
Radio Microphones and Backstage Support
Fit and maintain radio microphones for cast members, ensuring correct placement, comfort and
reliability.
Manage microphone batteries, packs and hygiene protocols, carrying out basic repairs or replacements where required.
Work closely with Stage Management and Wardrobe to support quick changes and mic placements backstage.
Train and support the Tech Swing to competently cover Front of House sound operation when required, and to carry out basic fault-finding and microphone fixes backstage during performances when the Head of Sound is positioned FOH.
Get-ins, Fit-ups and Get-outs
Lead the sound fit-up and get-out at each venue, including speaker rigging, cable runs and control positions.
Work closely with the Production Manager to ensure the system is installed and configured in line with the sound design.
Liaise with venue technical teams to integrate touring and in-house equipment, and to coordinate power and access requirements.
Liaison and Documentation
Maintain accurate documentation including sound plots, cue sheets, RF coordination notes and equipment inventories.
Report any technical faults, incidents or equipment issues promptly to the Production Manager.
Maintain the integrity and consistency of the sound design across all venues on the tour.
Job Requirements
Person Specification
Previous experience as Head of Sound or No.1 Sound on a professional theatre tour.
Proficient in operating digital mixing consoles and playback software (e.g. DiGiCo, Yamaha, QLab).
Strong working knowledge of radio microphone systems, RF coordination and PA systems.
Able to troubleshoot calmly and effectively under pressure during live performances.
Reliable, collaborative and professional in a fast-paced touring environment.
Comfortable working solo and managing complex technical setups independently.
Full clean UK driving licence desirable.
Other Information
Evening and weekend work will be required in line with the performance schedule.
Accommodation, per diems and travel will be provided in accordance with standard touring terms.
The role involves manual handling and physical work, including lifting and rigging equipment.
