Job Summary

The Head of Finance at Modern Art Oxford will be a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT) and is responsible for managing and reporting on the finances of the charity, acting as Company Secretary.

Job Description

The Head of Finance is a senior leadership position at Modern Art Oxford, forming part of the Senior Management Team (SMT) and acting as Company Secretary. Supported by a Senior Finance Officer and Finance Assistant, the post-holder leads the financial strategy and operations of the organisation, ensuring effective financial planning, compliance, and reporting across all areas.

Key responsibilities include working closely with the Director to develop and monitor the business plan, leading annual and long-term budgeting processes, managing cash flow and financial forecasting, and providing clear and timely financial reports to SMT and the Board of Trustees. The role oversees statutory and management accounts, cost control, tax matters including MGETR and Gift Aid, and ensures compliance with charity accounting, audit requirements, and financial legislation.

The Head of Finance is also responsible for financial elements of capital projects, liaising with pension trustees and external advisors, and arranging appropriate insurance cover. The role supports governance by attending Board and Finance & Property sub-committee meetings, coordinating the Annual Trustees Report, and ensuring regulatory filings are up to date.

As part of SMT, the post-holder contributes to strategic planning, organisational development, and reporting for funders including Arts Council England and Oxford City Council. The ideal candidate will bring senior-level finance experience, strong communication and planning skills, team leadership ability, and a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Charity sector experience and a relevant accountancy qualification are desirable.

Job Requirements

Experience in financial roles at a senior level, managing all financial functions and dealing with a range of activities, ideally in a small to medium-sized charity.

Used to preparing budgets, management accounts and cashflow forecasts, cost control management.

Knowledge of VAT regulations, VAT return processes and charity taxation.

A good knowledge of payroll and end of year audit processes.

Experience of business planning for a medium-sized charity.

A flexible approach to working in a environment requiring excellent multi-tasking and time-management skills.

Experience of using a CRM Database.

An understanding of IT and digital infrastructure.

Strong planning and organisational skills.

Experience of managing small teams.
