Job Description

Chiltern Open Air Museum (COAM) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Finance Manager to lead its finance function across both the main charity and its trading subsidiary. This part-time position (16-24 hours per week) offers flexible working options, including the opportunity to work remotely with some on-site presence in the scenic Chiltern Hills near Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire.

The Museum is a 45-acre site that welcomes over 45,000 visitors each year and includes 38 rescued historic buildings, woodland, gardens, and heritage-based events and education programmes. With an annual turnover just under £1 million, the Finance Manager will play a key role in supporting the CEO and departmental managers through effective financial control, reporting, budgeting, and analysis.

You will lead a small team of two part-time Finance Officers and work closely with the CEO, Treasurer, and trustees. Your responsibilities include preparing management accounts, overseeing payroll and VAT returns, submitting Gift Aid claims, monitoring cash flow, producing year-end financial statements, and ensuring full compliance with charity finance regulations. The role also includes supporting fundraising activities and managing risk through regular reporting to the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee.

We are looking for a fully qualified accountant (ACCA, ACA, CIMA, or CIPFA) with experience in the charity sector and a strong grasp of restricted funds and statutory reporting. Familiarity with QuickBooks and a proven ability to manage a finance team are highly desirable.

Salary: £35,360 per annum (pro rata £14,144-£21,216)

Job Requirements

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA, CIPFA) with prior experience in a similar senior level finance role within the charity sector.
  • A strong knowledge of charity finance including restricted funds, compliance and statutory reporting is a requirement.
  • Experience of using QuickBooks would be helpful.
  • Experience of line managing others in a Finance Team.
  • Demonstrable competency in the preparation of budgets and the reporting and forecasting against these.
  • Financial and business acumen (supporting the CEO in assessing opportunities and applying resources effectively).
  • Strong interpersonal skills leading to effective relationships with other managers, the CEO and the Board.
