Filmmaker Traineeship Job Description & Mentoring Info

Key Opportunity Details

  • Role Aim: This traineeship is for a disabled entry/early career filmmaker.
  • Location: You must be able to work in person in Newcastle in North East England.
  • Eligibility: Candidates must be aged 16 or over and have the right to work in the U.K.. You should be someone who is not yet self-employed but is interested in becoming self-employed.
  • Application Deadline: 9am, Wednesday 14th January 2026.
  • Placement Start: The placement at Great North Museum is expected to start in April 2026.

The Paid Filmmaker Placement

  • Work/Pay: You will receive 40 hours of guaranteed paid filmmaking work with Great North Museum, Hancock.
  • The pay is £25.00 per hour.

Mentoring and Support
Business Mentoring

  • Goal: To help you develop your filmmaking business
  • Duration/Format: You will receive 50 hours of business mentoring over 1 year, delivered by SAMEE.
  • Meetings: Mentoring will be 1 hour per week
  • Help Provided: The mentoring will help you:
    • Register as self-employed when you are ready.
    • Plan what work you want to do.
    • Find help for filling in tax returns (if applicable).

Film, TV and Video Industry Mentoring (Screen Goals Mentor)

  • Goal: To help you find work and opportunities in North East England’s film, TV, and video industry.
  • Hours: You will receive 5 hours of mentoring.
  • Help Provided: The mentor can:
  • Introduce you to people who can help you or who are looking for a filmmaker.
  • Give you feedback on film pitches or applications.

Other Help

  • Beacon Films can help you apply for Access to Work if you need funding to cover access costs.
  • They can also help you find people to advise you about telling benefit providers that you are being paid, if you receive benefits.

Job Requirements

Required Skills & Tasks:

The filmmaker must:

  • Be able to follow a filmmaking brief.
  • Understand how to put together a creative and interesting film.
  • Be very comfortable using filming, sound recording, and editing equipment.
  • Be a good communicator.
  • Be able to direct, film, sound-record, and edit the films.
  • Equipment: Beacon Films will provide all the equipment, but you can use your own if you prefer.
