Are you aged 18-25 and passionate about poetry and eager to develop your creative career? East Riding Libraries are seeking a young writer aged 18 to 25 to to be their first Young Poet Laureate, receiving 6 months of mentorship from established East Riding poets.

Are you passionate about poetry and eager to develop your creative career? Do you dream of inspiring others and making your voice heard? The search is on for East Riding Libraries’ first Young Poet Laureate, inviting applications from talented young writers aged 18 to 25.

This is a unique opportunity to work closely with established poets and grow your skills, confidence, and reach. The successful candidate will receive:

  • Three months of mentorship with the current East Riding Poet Laureate, Cassandra Parkin, from January to March 2026.
  • Followed by three months of mentorship with the new 2026 East Riding Poet Laureate.

Throughout your tenure, you’ll benefit from tailored development opportunities, including:

  • Support and guidance in crafting your poetry.
  • Training in designing and leading poetry workshops.
  • Opportunities to perform your work at public events.

We’re looking for someone who not only loves poetry, but who is ready to engage with and inspire people across East Riding. Whether your poetry is spoken, written, or performed, we want to hear your voice.

Please note that this is an unpaid opportunity, with a focus on mentorship and developing your practice.

A minimum of 10 days of mentorship will take place between January to June 2026. This will be a minimum of 2 hours per day, totalling a minimum of 20 hours overall. Exact dates and times will be flexible to suit the chosen applicant.

Job Requirements

Please note that there will be public-facing elements in this role. The Young Poet Laureate will be required to:

  • Support in delivering public facing workshops.
  • Perform their poetry at public events.

There will be a minimum of 10 sessions of mentorship from established East Riding Poets between January and June 2026. Exact dates and times will be flexible to suit the chosen applicant.
