Job Description
Job Description Summary
The core purpose of this role is to transform plain glass into decorative, personalised, or branded items. This includes preparing, masking, and blasting glass to create frosted or textured patterns that add aesthetic value and add depth and life to the designs commissioned.
Previous experience would be a bonus but is not required as we are happy to train and develop the skill set.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Surface Preparation: Cleaning and prepping glass surfaces to ensure proper adhesion of masking materials.
Masking: Creating or interpreting designs, then applying, cutting, and weeding abrasive-resistant vinyl masks/stencils by hand.
Sand Carving/Depth Carving: Operating sandblasting booths/machines to spray abrasive materials (sand/grit) at high pressure to erode the glass surface to the desired depth and density. Creating 3D effects by varying the duration and pressure of the blasting process on different areas of the design.
Collaboration and Quality Control: Consulting with designers and the Studio team on designs and inspecting finished pieces for precision, uniformity, and quality.
Equipment Maintenance: Maintaining sandblasting guns, air compressors, hoses, and abrasive media quality.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Artistic Ability: Keen eye for detail and strong artistic, design, or layout skills.
Manual Dexterity: Ability to work with hand tools for intricate stencilling and manual masking.
Experience: Previous experience in decorative glass, fine arts, or sandblasting in a manufacturing environment is usually preferred but not necessary.
Physical Stamina: Ability to handle heavy sheets of glass and work in a high-ventilation, sometimes dusty, environment.
There will also be other elements of the design process that you would be involved in once established in the sandblasting role.
