Kirklees Museums and Galleries
Job Summary
Job Description
As Curatorial and Technical Manager, you will lead the curatorial work needed to document, prepare, move and install collections as part of an ambitious period of transformation. Working with staff, communities and national partners, you will support the delivery of high-quality, co-produced content while building experience in large-scale change, strategic leadership and service excellence.
You will manage and inspire a skilled curatorial team, providing professional leadership for collections care, documentation, digitisation, exhibitions and access. Working closely with technical colleagues, you will ensure high standards of collections management, display, public access and safe working are maintained across the service.
Through inclusive curatorial practice and improved digital access, you will help strengthen connections with audiences and ensure our museums reflect the diverse stories, histories and communities of Kirklees. As a key role in shaping collections, exhibitions and interpretation you will engage new and existing audiences through both physical and digital experiences.
Our collections include nationally significant natural history specimens, industrial heritage linked to textiles, engineering and transport, archaeology, and contemporary British art. You will help improve access to these collections while ensuring their long-term care and preservation.
We’re looking for an ambitious professional with significant experience in collections care, curatorial and exhibition practice, documentation standards, digitisation and collections management systems. You will bring strong leadership, project management, budget management and problem-solving skills, alongside the ability to work effectively with communities, partners, donors and funders.
Most importantly, you will be passionate about creating inclusive, accessible and culturally relevant museum experiences and motivated to help shape the future of heritage in Kirklees.
Job Requirements
We are seeking an experienced museum, gallery or heritage professional with proven leadership and management experience. You will have expertise in curatorial and/or technical management, collections care, exhibitions, audience development and collections management systems. Strong project management skills are essential, including delivering complex projects, commissioning services, managing budgets/resources, and fundraising.
You’ll be an effective communicator, capable of building partnerships across organisations, engaging a wide range of stakeholders and leading teams through change. Experience in staff development and performance management is essential, alongside the ability to develop systems and processes that support complex programmes of work.
You will understand the role museums play within communities, work flexibly to meet service needs, and be willing to provide specialist support during collections or site emergencies. Relevant qualifications or experience is required
