Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge

Job Description

The Fitzwilliam Museum: Opening up the past to transform our futures

The Fitzwilliam Museum is the principal museum of the University of Cambridge and one of the world’s leading university museums. Home to over half a million works of art and antiquities spanning cultures and centuries, it is internationally renowned for research, conservation, exhibitions and learning. Around 500,000 people visit annually, and we reach many more through touring exhibitions, digital content, loans and community engagement.

The Communications team is part of the Audiences and Brand directorate, which focuses on increasing visibility, engagement and income, and building meaningful relationships internally and externally. The directorate brings together audience insight, CRM, PR, media, internal comms, marketing, digital content, interpretation, membership and individual giving.

We are now recruiting a Communications Assistant – a new role providing key support across internal communications and PR. Working with the Internal Communications Lead and Press and Media Lead, this post offers a mix of administrative, creative and operational support. You’ll also liaise with journalists, artists, producers, film crews and agencies to help ensure smooth delivery of communications and a professional experience for colleagues and stakeholders.

Job Requirements

You’ll support the planning, coordination and delivery of internal comms – including writing and publishing content for the intranet, Teams, newsletters, email updates, digital screens and staff briefings. You’ll also help deliver staff events (e.g. Bitesizes & all-staff meetings), coordinating logistics, editing recordings and managing distribution.

Additional duties include managing the internal inbox, calendar and queries, escalating as needed; generating content ideas with teams; and monitoring engagement through analytics, surveys and attendance data.

Job Responsibilities

Externally, you’ll work with the Media Lead and PR agency to manage press enquiries, coordinate media responses across Museum teams, and maintain image banks and contact lists. You’ll help deliver media visits, press trips and filming, distribute press materials and track media coverage. You’ll also contribute to the broader PR strategy – helping identify stories and shape content that supports exhibitions, public programmes, research and retail.

About you:

We’re looking for someone bright and enthusiastic, with a proven ability to deliver high-quality administrative and support work. You’ll be a strong communicator, able to build effective relationships across a range of internal and external stakeholders. Some experience of communications, media or events would be an advantage.

The University supports equality, diversity and inclusion and welcomes applications from all sections of society. All staff must have the right to live and work in the UK.
