The Company
City Youth Theatre (CYT) is a new initiative developed by the City of London School for Girls (CLSG). This year, the programme is open to pupils in Year 6 – Year 9 (ages 10 to 14), from CLSG, City Junior School (CJS) and City of London School (CLS). We aim to accept all applicants, unless numbers exceed capacity, in which case we will audition for entry. Specific solo and featured roles are auditioned in the first few weeks of rehearsals.
The Role
We are looking for someone to join the artistic team as Choreographer for City Youth Theatre’s inaugural production, Annie: The Musical. The post-holder will have demonstrated ability in choreographing large-scale musical productions and will liaise regularly with parents, City of London School for Girls (CLSG) Drama Department staff, and external partners. The ideal candidate will have experience working with young people, preferably within theatre/performing arts disciplines. The Choreographer will report to the CLSG Director of Drama.
This role is a 10-month fixed term contract from January to October, (including technical and dress rehearsals) spread over the 10-month term. The post holder will only be required on Saturday mornings for the majority of the contract and will not be required for the full three-hour slot every week.
This post has a flat fee of £1,790 for rehearsal time (approx. 80hrs), plus £500 for prep.
Job Requirements
The ideal candidate will:
- Have prior experience with choreographing productions, ideally musical theatre
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Have experience working with young people, particularly within arts education environments
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for supporting young people
- Demonstrate excellent time management and leadership skills
- Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to collaborate with other creatives in pursuit of a common goal
- Be comfortable working with a company size between 25 to 40 pupils
- Supervise large groups of students aged 10 – 14 (Years 6-9) during breaks and meal breaks during show run
Job Responsibilities
- Define show’s creative vision in collaboration with a Director, Musical Director, and other production team members
- Choreograph Annie: The Musical according to cast ability
- Audition prospective participants and advise Director when casting roles based on dance ability and choreographic vision for the show
- Teach choreography to students enrolled
- Run rehearsals efficiently and effectively to teach choreography for Annie: The Musical, in allotted rehearsal time
- Guide youth participants in understanding professional style rehearsals while maintaining a positive atmosphere
