Artist Membership Lead

Ort Gallery

Job Summary

The artist membership lead is responsible for the members programme of regular events and a yearly members show. They will co-design and plan these with the existing member artists of Ort Gallery. This role is intended for existing members. However, if you aren’t a member you can still apply.

Job Description

This is a really exciting time to join Ort Gallery. After a period of intense change where we implemented caring and equitable working methods into our organisation we are now in a calmer period where we can take our time supporting others to work in the arts. We want to be the change we want to see in the arts: an inclusive, warm, supportive employer working towards social justice in our hyperlocal organisation.

You will be supported throughout your time at Ort Gallery. We want to encourage people to apply for this role with no leadership experience. This is because we believe that the arts industry is made up of too few people from marginalised backgrounds and we are passionate to support these individuals to reach these roles with proper dedicated support.

The role of the Artist Membership Lead is very much about facilitation leadership. This means that we want to work with our existing group of members to organise exhibitions and events that are relevant to them.

The Artist Membership Lead will work closely with the team to:
– take the lead in planning for the future members programme
– overseeing the yearly exhibition of members artwork
– managing and supporting artists to join the membership
– Support members to access the wider offer by Ort Gallery
– facilitate dialogue between people from different social backgrounds through every day interaction, social media and events
– be a point of contact for members
– support fundraising where appropriate
– work with the team to plan the members marketing (Social Media & Newsletter)

This is a freelance position. The fee is £3,960 for 1 year, calculated at £330 day rate for 12 days (max 8 hours per day). Funded by Arts Council England and Community Fund (both are grants made up of lottery funds). You will work flexibly around your own commitments.

Job Requirements

– This role is intended to be for existing members of Ort Gallery. However, if you aren’t a member you can still apply if you feel the role speaks to you and/or you bring valuable experience or skills to the organisation. Please speak to us ahead of applying if you have never been an Ort Gallery member so we can support you ahead of the application stage.
– Experience of volunteering or working in a gallery or similar organisation or experience of working with artists or community groups.
– The ability to communicate with a wide range of people.
– The ability to remain calm in difficult situations and when faced with complaints.
– Sensitivity towards cultural differences.
– The ability to support, nurture and motivate others.
– A commitment to continuing professional development and improving their professional practice.
– A commitment to equality and diversity.
– A passion for the arts.
– A commitment to promoting arts to everyone in society.
– Ability to work collaboratively.
