Job Description

The Headmaster and CEO of Eltham College Family of Schools seeks to appoint an Artist-in-Residence for a one-year assignment for a working artist in any medium. The successful applicant will have access to studio space and use of the facilities within the Art Department, including an etching press, ceramics kilns, dark-room and other equipment.

The post holder is expected to contribute to curriculum and co-curricular Art, as well as the community work that takes place within our purpose-built gallery.

The Artist will be engaged on a self-employed basis for an average of 3 days per week. However, the position is flexible and may evolve through the course of the residency. Opportunities may also be available for the successful applicant to exhibit their work within the Gerald Moore Gallery.

Eltham College is a highly successful independent day school in south-east London, educating boys and girls aged 7 to 18 across both Junior and Senior Schools. The College has grown considerably over recent years: there are now over 800 students in the Senior School and around 260 pupils in the Junior School and places are heavily oversubscribed. Since 2020, girls have been able to join Years 3 and 7, mirroring the Sixth Form which has been coeducational for over 45 years. The school places an equal emphasis on academic, pastoral and co-curricular excellence and has an outstanding reputation in all three areas.

Salary range: £16k – £18k

Agreed 3 days a week, 8.30am – 5.30pm (somewhat flexible with agreement)

Job Requirements

Deliver a project within curriculum Art lessons, working with all three Art teachers in line with the Director of Art’s guidance;

Support GCSE and A level exam success through tutorials, in-lesson support, and mentoring pupils across all year groups;

Be available to work from 8.30am to 5.30pm, including delivering assemblies when required and leading after-school workshops or clubs;

Design, plan and deliver at least three enrichment workshops for Art Scholars, and contribute to half-termly workshops with EC students, in consultation with the Director of Art;

Facilitate a weekly term-time after-school art class at the Gerald Moore Gallery and support a lunchtime club in the Art Department;

Present an exhibition of work at the conclusion of the residency and, in collaboration with Art staff, support pupil engagement through in-lesson discussions. Develop and deliver an accompanying gallery programme of tours and activities for students across all year groups;
