Music Directors (Oxfordshire)

Liberty Choir is an award-winning charity bringing local volunteers and professional musicians into prison every week to create transformative musical and social experiences through singing. Through our choir programmes, we help the prison residents we work with build confidence and connect with others.

We are recruiting highly skilled and experienced Music Directors to join our team as we continue our expansion into the South East in Autumn 2026.

You will lead engaging, high-quality choir sessions for participants with a wide range of musical experiences, working alongside a professional accompanist and our volunteers. Sessions will run every week on the same day during weekday business hours (usually between 9:00 am – 12:00 pm or 1:30 – 4:30 pm), with the exact day and time will be confirmed in due course. Each session will last 3 hours inclusive of the time required to enter and leave the prison.

Successful candidates will be mature and well-rounded, experienced as both music directors and performers. You will be able to combine excellent musical leadership and teaching skills with warmth, confidence and the ability to inspire others through your musicianship and character. Music Directors are also responsible for maintaining registers in the prisons and communicating with volunteers, prison contacts and our operations team. Therefore, excellent levels of personal organisation and computer literacy are essential.

Liberty Choir provides paid training to prepare you to work safely and confidently within a prison environment. On completion of a short probation period, Music Directors will be paid £200/session. There may also be opportunities to work in our London, Surrey and Sussex prisons.

As prisons are not near transport hubs, you must have your own car/ transport. Successful applicants will be required to undertake security vetting and key training for work within prisons.
