We are casting Mikey in 93 ’til Infinity, a brand-new Leeds hip-hop theatre production about friendship, memory, masculinity and the city’s early 1990s hip-hop culture.

Mikey is one of three old friends looking back at the time that shaped them: youth clubs, bedrooms, tapes, first performances and the pull of wanting to be heard. In youth, Mikey is sharp, funny, charismatic and restless. He has charm, quick wit and bravado, but can push things too far. In middle age, he is more cynical, guarded and self-protective. He still has humour and charisma, but carries unresolved regret and a need to stay in control.

The role moves between present-day scenes and memory sequences, so we are looking for an actor who can shift clearly between younger and older versions of the same person without caricature. The part needs strong comic timing, emotional range, confidence with text, and an ability to work with rhythm and ensemble storytelling.

For this character, we are looking for a West Yorkshire-based white male actor, playing age 48-52, who is confident with rap. You do not need to be a professional rapper, but you must be comfortable delivering rap with clarity, rhythm, energy and character.

Rehearsals and performances are at Slung Low Warehouse, Holbeck in Leeds. The contract is from 24th August-12th September. The fee £1,893, plus £228 holiday pay. Total contract of £2,121
