state of the [art]
Job Summary
Job Description
state of the [art] is looking for a Sound Designer for Live Experience for a paid participatory performance project in 2026.
The work sits somewhere between theatre, music, club culture, public space, myth, games, audience interaction and live performance.
We’re looking for someone with strong taste, musical instinct and an interest in sound as dramaturgy, not decoration. Someone who understands atmosphere, bass, silence, energy, transitions, audience movement and collective feeling. Someone work has theatre experience but also clubbing experience. Someone who can sit between qlab and also live mixing.
This is not just a traditional cueing role. We are looking for someone who can help shape the sonic world of the work: music, atmosphere, transitions, audience movement, participatory moments, public-space energy, rhythm, pressure, release and silence.
Fee: £1,000. Travel outside London covered separately.
Availability needed across late August – late September 2026, including rehearsal/process time, tech and performance dates across London and Gloucester. Exact dates will be shared privately with shortlisted artists.
We want to be transparent: the budget is tight, and we know this is not the full fee the role deserves. This may suit someone looking for experience on a bold, non-traditional project, or someone who has the capacity to work at a reduced rate because they are excited by the challenge, the collaboration and the world of the work.
Deadline: Monday 18 May 2026, 23:59.
Job Requirements
We’re looking for someone excited by theatre sound design, music-led performance, club/live event energy, interactive and participatory experiences, devising rooms and sound as dramaturgy.
You do not need to have made this exact kind of work before, but you should be interested in audiences who move, speak, play and gather, and in how sound can shift atmosphere, guide behaviour and create collective feeling.
We are especially interested in people with strong musical taste, sonic instinct, openness, curiosity and a willingness to make bold choices within limited resources.
