Job Summary

Freelance Community Engagement Officer (2.5 days/week) needed to support a project preserving South Asian histories in Leicester & Leicestershire. Work includes collecting oral histories and materials, leading to exhibitions, a short film, community events and school programmes.

Job Description

We are looking for a passionate and proactive Freelance Community Engagement Officer (2.5 days/week, 12 months Fee:£13,333) to support an exciting project focused on collecting, preserving, and sharing the histories of South Asian communities in Leicester and Leicestershire. This project will gather and archive oral histories, photographs, letters, and other personal materials, culminating in:

A temporary exhibition at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery.

A touring exhibition

A short film to complement the exhibition.

A range of community engagement events and activities.

A schools’ programme with educational resources.

Content and materials for a permanent digital archive, ensuring accessibility for future generations.

Home, Identity and Belonging: A British South Asian Journey is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we will be able to collect, preserve and share personal stories, oral histories and materials, culminating in an exhibition that celebrates the experiences and contributions of British South Asians.

Job Requirements

Essential:

Experience in community engagement and working with diverse communities, particularly South Asian communities in the UK.

Strong ability to build relationships with individuals and groups to encourage participation.

Knowledge of digitisation and archiving processes for heritage materials.

Excellent event organisation and facilitation skills.

Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage audiences of all ages.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a project team.

Desirable:

Familiarity with museum or archive best practices.

Experience working on heritage, arts, or community-led projects.

Experience in training and managing volunteers.

Experience in collecting oral histories and handling personal materials sensitively.
