Job Summary

The Ashmolean Museum is seeking a Project Assistant to support the DIEGEST project, an international initiative developing a digital tool to transform ancient coin die studies.

About the role
You will prepare and quality-check coin image datasets and metadata, support testing of the DIEGEST tool, and help validate outputs against existing research. You will document findings, provide feedback to developers, and maintain well-organised project data. You will also assist in organising international workshops and contribute to project reporting, working within an interdisciplinary team.

This is a full-time, fixed-term (12 months) post.

About You
You will be completing or hold a master’s degree in Archaeology, Ancient History, Classics, or a related field, with knowledge of ancient coinage. You will have experience handling structured data, strong analytical skills, and excellent attention to detail.

You will be confident using spreadsheets and managing digital files, able to prioritise work effectively, and communicate clearly with a range of audiences. You will work well both independently and as part of a collaborative international team. Experience in numismatics, digital humanities, or research data management would be advantageous.

Job Requirements

Prepare, standardise, and document coin image datasets and associated metadata
provided by the project team and external contributors for ingestion into the DIEGEST
automated die-study tool, ensuring completeness, consistency, and adherence to
agreed technical specifications.
Undertake systematic data quality control, including verification of image quality,
formatting, file naming conventions, and structured metadata alignment.
Support the calibration and testing of the DIEGEST tool by running structured test
cases across different coin series and documenting outputs.
Contribute to the validation of algorithmic results by comparing automated die
identifications with established manual die studies and expert assessments, recording
discrepancies and performance observations.
Provide structured feedback to the development team, including clear documentation
of tool performance, edge cases, and potential areas for refinement.
