Job Summary

Create and develop performance text with Spun Glass Theatre at The Stade Hall, Hastings, with a vision of creating touring work. Freelance contract/ £200 per week ( one day a week )

ABOUT SPUN GLASS THEATRE:

Spun Glass Theatre is a community-focused theatre company dedicated to creating, supporting and presenting live performances. The theatre we make is centered around family. It is sometimes for families in its style and objective, often inclusive of early years’ experience of creativity. We are equally interested in exploring the idea of family in our society, telling stories that interrogate situations, moments, feelings, lived experience and themes that impact family life. Committed to providing accessible cultural space to do our work and enrich our surroundings we operate The Stade Hall in Hastings, standing in close relationship with other community spaces. Working closely with artists, audiences and partners, the company delivers culturally rich programming, while expanding access to theatre across Hastings and the wider region.

We are seeking to develop a brand new creative partnership with a playwright. The role has no fixed outcome however we are looking to invest in a writing creative, with a vision of developing new play/s for touring theatre for studio and community spaces in the South East. Developed, rehearsed and premiered at our community venue in Hastings, The Stade Hall.

The playwright will be supported and work closely with the Creative Director, and producing associates, and require an artistic commitment and/or understanding the company’s mission. The role will suit a playwright interested in tourable actor/character/relationship centric work, an individual that enjoys field research, and working closely with a director. You might be an emerging or new playwright, or someone with an established body of work excited by the opportunity to develop new plays and ideas with a company and small venue.

Job Requirements

Essential qualities and experience

Educated to a degree level with an arts, theatre or creative writing qualification

Experience writing plays

A cultural understanding of rural touring and the community sector

A good understanding of your own process and what you need to deliver your best work

* A love of creative process and keen interest developing drama

* A dramatic interest in the concept of family in our society and broad feeling for the impact our world has on family life.

* Experience developing characters, creating dramatic situations, events, plots and writing playable text for actors and audiences.

Desirable qualities and experience

  • Experience in creating, delivering early years culture and artistic activity for children. Or Theatre for families.
