Job Description
The Front of House Manager is responsible for ensuring an outstanding visitor experience across all public areas of Hampstead Theatre. Working closely with the Theatre Manager, the role oversees day to day Front of House operations, safety procedures, team leadership and customer service delivery.
You will act as senior Duty Manager for performances and events, ensuring the building is welcoming, inclusive and compliant with all health, safety and licensing requirements. You will lead a team of Supervisors, Access Hosts and Ushers, supporting recruitment, induction, training, performance management and rota creation in line with operational needs.
The role oversees opening and closing routines, fire safety, first aid readiness, incident reporting, and liaison with housekeeping and security to maintain high standards of cleanliness and safety. You will support the Theatre Manager with risk assessments, accident investigations and maintaining accurate compliance records.
The post also contributes to commercial activity, including supporting hospitality and fundraising events, managing merchandise sales and reconciliation, and ensuring staff are fully briefed on shows, promotions and customer facing initiatives. You will analyse customer feedback and operational data to inform improvements and support reporting requirements.
Strong organisational ability, attention to detail, and the capacity to remain calm under pressure are essential to maintaining smooth operational delivery in a busy producing theatre environment.
Job Requirements
Essential requirements include strong commitment to delivering an exceptional, accessible visitor experience; excellent communication skills; and proven experience managing or supervising Front of House, venue operations or customer service teams. Candidates must demonstrate leadership ability, sound knowledge of health and safety and fire safety, and experience with opening/closing procedures, incident management and compliance. Strong organisational skills, rota planning experience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays is required, along with willingness to obtain First Aid and Fire Marshal training. Desirable: experience in a theatre or cultural venue.
