The Cultural Spring seeks an exceptional Independent Chair to lead our Creative People and Places consortium (Apr 2026–Mar 2029). You’ll chair quarterly meetings, champion social justice, and advocate for arts, culture and communities across Sunderland and South Tyneside.

Job Description

The Cultural Spring are looking for an exceptional individual to fulfil the role of Independent Consortium Chair, to lead our Creative People and Places (CPP) consortium through our next exciting journey from April 2026 to March 2029.

The Steering Group Chair provides strategic leadership, governance and advocacy for The Cultural Spring CPP project, a successful community arts programme across Sunderland and South Tyneside. The Chair ensures the project delivers its artistic, social and community objectives effectively, inclusively and sustainably, while maintaining the independence of the CPP programme.

The Chair leads the project’s Steering Group and supports the Project Director and team. The Steering Group sits alongside the Board of The Cultural Spring Charity, which retains responsibility for finance, staffing, HR and legal matters for the project.

From April 2026, The Cultural Spring Charity will become the lead body for the project, working in consortium with the University of Sunderland, Inspire South Tyneside, Sunderland Music, Arts and Culture (MAC) Trust and Young Asian Voices.

We are looking for someone with a strong sense of social justice, an interest in the communities of Sunderland and South Tyneside, and a commitment to arts, culture and creativity. The Chair will champion meaningful community participation and co-creation, ensuring community voices are heard and drive decision-making throughout the programme.

In terms of the time commitment – Approx. 6-12 days across each year (including meetings, events, and preparatory work). Occasional attendance at community and partner events may be required.

This is an unpaid, voluntary role as part of a community arts project financed by Arts Council England. Reasonable expenses will be paid along with an agreed attendance allowance for any freelancer wishing to undertake the role.

Job Requirements

Essential:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in community, arts or non-profit settings

  • Strong understanding of governance and strategic planning

  • Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills

  • Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion

  • Ability to act with integrity, diplomacy and impartiality

  • Passion for social justice and the role of the arts in community development and wellbeing

Desirable:

  • Experience working with local authorities, funders or arts organisations

  • Previous experience in a Chair’s role

  • Knowledge of financial management and charity governance

  • Established networks within cultural, philanthropic or community sectors
