Heritage Officer

The London Borough of Croydon is seeking a passionate and capable Heritage Officer to join our newly formed Croydon Heritage Service. This is an exciting opportunity to work with Croydon Archives and Museum of Croydon collections, helping improve access to the borough’s rich and diverse history.

You will support the Borough Archivist in managing and developing the Borough Archive and Local History Collection in line with the Archive Service Accreditation Standard. Key responsibilities include overseeing the Research Room, supervising volunteers, responding to enquiries, and facilitating access to collections. You will also undertake core archive tasks such as collections care, cataloguing, digitisation, and managing reproduction requests.

In addition to your core archive responsibilities, you will contribute to museum activities as part of our integrated Heritage Service. This includes developing the Handling Collection for schools and community engagement, assisting with public programmes, and supporting museum collections care work.

This role offers valuable experience in an Accredited Archive Service and is ideal for those applying for, currently undertaking, or recently qualified with a recognised Archives Management qualification. We are looking for a motivated self-starter with a positive approach to teamwork, as you will work closely with a second Heritage Officer and the wider team. You must have demonstrable experience providing public access to archives, confidence in using collections management systems, knowledge of sector standards and legislation, and strong research, customer service, and communication skills. You should be highly organised and able to prioritise and manage a varied workload. Familiarity with Croydon’s history or experience in local authority heritage services is desirable.
