Job Summary

Lost Scriptures is a new Heritage Lottery funded project to tell the story of the early years of Birmingham’s Hip Hop heritage for the first time. It will shed new light on the international influence, the political nexus and the local idiosyncrasies of the Birmingham Hip Hop scene from 1985-2000.

Job Description

We are now looking for three assistant researcher/interviewers to support people from a diverse range of backgrounds to share their stories of Birmingham’s early Hip Hop culture. Successful applicants will receive training and support leading to independently recording and processing approximately 15 short (30min) oral history interviews to contribute to the archive.

Fixed Contract: £3,000 (20 days @ £150/day, 26 weeks). Equivalent 150 hours across 7 months.

Job Type: Freelance contract, beginning March 2026

Job Requirements

Essential

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to make people from a range of different backgrounds feel comfortable and confident being recorded and sharing their own experiences.
  • Close familiarity with Birmingham’s Hip Hop culture.
  • Either based in Birmingham or willing to travel regularly to record the majority of interviews in the area.
  • Patience, attention to detail, and care for participants.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with care.
  • Basic computer skills, including some familiarity with audio recording equipment.
  • Empathy and sensitivity to issues around ethnicity, criminal justice, gender, sexuality, mental health and discrimination.

Desirable

  • Experience recording interviews to be shared publicly e.g. oral histories, podcasts, radio interviews.
  • Confident in the use of professional-standard audio recording equipment.
