Job Summary

Kenny Wax Ltd is one of the leading Production Companies operating in the West End and on Tour. We are looking for an experienced Head of Wigs, Hair and Make-up (WHAM) to join our team in London for the West End transfer of this new musical.

Job Description

  • Run the WHAM department throughout rehearsals, tech and performances;
  • Attend rehearsals and fittings as mutually agreed between you, us and the WHAM Designer and/or Wigs Supervisor;
  • Uphold high production standards set by the WHAM Designer and maintain the artistic quality of the original design;
  • Be responsible for the maintenance of all wigs/hairpieces;
  • Dress and set, and assist cast with fitting of, the wigs/hairpieces;
  • Assist with quick changes during shows;
  • Provide advice or assistance with make up, ensuring makeup worn is in line with the original creative designs;
  • Directly manage the Deputy Head of WHAM and WHAM Assistant;
  • Create weekly schedules for the WHAM department;
  • Learn all tracks in your department and perform these if necessary;
  • Teach your track to other members of your department to ensure cover;
  • Order and replenish department supplies;
  • Liaise with the Wigs Supervisor about replacements, alterations or repairs;
  • Recruit, train and manage deps to ensure sufficient cover;
  • Work collaboratively with all departments, including the theatre technical team;
  • Ensure WHAM equipment and backstage areas are kept tidy and secure;
  • Support rehearsals, promotional/marketing events and other calls;
  • Ensure a safe working environment is maintained and Health and Safety procedures are adhered to;
  • Be a proactive member of the technical team;
  • Compile and keep up-to-date show paperwork;
  • Account for the administration of petty cash for your Department, obtain VAT invoices for hires/purchases;
  • Maintain the department Health and Safety record and housekeeping procedure;
  • Comply with rules and regulations at venues under control of the Production;
  • Work in accordance with the Producer’s Health and Safety policy, which may include training;
  • Any other reasonable duty that falls within the remit of a Head of WHAM based on industry norms, or as directed by the WHAM Designer, Wigs Supervisor, Production Manager, Company Manager, Producers or General Managers.

Job Requirements

  • Demonstrable professional experience working in a similar role in the West End or on Tour;
  • Previous experience of working on a West End musical;
  • Extensive Wigs/Hair experience and excellent technical skills;
  • Proven experience in working with textured and afro hair and all ranges of hair types;
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written with excellent attention to detail;
  • A proactive and flexible attitude;
  • Previous experience of managing a team;
  • The ability to work closely with actors and creative teams, and handle confidential information with discretion
  • The ability to work under pressure and effectively prioritise;
  • Awareness of current Health & Safety legislation;
  • Knowledge of SOLT BECTU agreements.
