Job Summary

As a member of the technical team, deliver the technical and production requirements for visiting, in-house productions and events.

Job Description

The technical team consists of: a Technical Stage Manager; five permanent Technicians and casual Technicians. The Theatre Technician will support the technical delivery of the shows and events at South Hill Park Arts Centre. This role has a sound bias, but the technician will be expected to work across all technical areas. Training will be provided where required.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Theatre Technician will:

  • Assist incoming companies with their get-ins and get-outs.
  • Operate shows with an emphasis on sound but including lighting, stage and stage management as required.
  • Rig lighting, sound and scenery as required.
  • Maintain and repair technical equipment.
  • Take on various technical roles for South Hill Park in-house productions in the Wilde Theatre and other performance spaces in the Arts Centre.
  • Set up and operate other events such as conferences.
  • Assist in the construction of scenery, props, electrical practicals that may be used for in-house productions.
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions and other events as required.

General:

  • Represent South Hill Park as an ambassador for the organisation at press nights, performances, meetings and events.
  • Follow and adhere to all health and safety procedures and policy.
  • Undertake any other duties as may be reasonably requested by the Technical Stage Manager.

Maintain good professional relationships with:

  • Staff, tutors, volunteers and members of the Board of South Hill Park;
  • All other individuals and organisations with whom South Hill Park seeks to work.

Job Requirements

Education

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths

Desirable:

  • Training in technical theatre
  • First Aid at Work

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Aptitude/strong interest for operating and setting up sound in an entertainment environment
  • Willingness to work at height using ladders and other access equipment
  • Ability to undertake manual handling activities

Desirable:

  • Technical experience in an arts venue
  • Programming and operation of sound desks
  • Programming and operation of lighting desks
  • Competent using hand and power tools
  • Knowledge of health and safety in a theatre or entertainment environment

  • Calm under pressure
  • Able to work evenings and weekends

Desirable:

  • An interest in the arts
