Job Summary

Potted History will progress the post-excavation analysis of digs in Barnstaple from the 1970s and 80s. The nine-month development phase will develop post-excavation procedures and publish a detailed report on one important kiln site, leading to a funding application for the 3 year Delivery Phase.

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE:

To lead the delivery of the Development Phase of The National Lottery Heritage Fund supported project “Potted History”, as laid out in the project programme including:

  • Developing and testing post-excavation procedures and a collections review methodology on a pilot site from Barnstaple’s extensive 1970s and 1980s excavation archives
  • Creation of a methodology and a suite of procedures, including collections review and rationalisation, that can be applied to the remaining site archives during the project Delivery Phase
  • Preparation of archive reports for the pilot site to be uploaded to OASIS
  • Coordination of specialist contractors, including community engagement, evaluation and specialist finds consultants
  • Training and leading volunteers working on the project
  • Working with the Culture Manager and Advisory Board to plan and cost the Delivery Phase of the project for according the requirements of The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Job Requirements

  • Degree in Archaeology or equivalent experience in instances where these qualifications could not have been gained
  • Eligible for membership of CIfA
  • Ability to use MS Office suite, the internet and other software such as design and editing packages
  • Substantial post-excavation project experience
  • Finds rationalisation and archives preparation
  • Preparation of excavation reports to archive report standard
  • Leading, developing and motivating a small team.
  • Working with volunteers
  • Organisational skills, including project delivery
  • Effective communicator (verbally and in writing)
  • Able to maintain strong and effective working relationships with colleagues, volunteers and other stakeholders.
  • Commitment to engaging communities in understanding and valuing archaeology
  • High standard of professional ethics and integrity
  • Self-motivated and able to work without direct supervisio
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
