Job Description

As Commissioning Editor – Scotland, you will lead on the creation of powerful, inclusive stories that highlight the richness and diversity of Scottish art and collections. You’ll play a vital role in shaping Art UK’s editorial voice in Scotland, working closely with freelance writers, artists, researchers, and content producers to bring new perspectives to our platform.

You are a skilled and sensitive editor with excellent judgement, strong writing skills, and an instinct for what makes a great story. You have a deep knowledge of art and are passionate about making it accessible to wider audiences. You care about reaching underrepresented voices and uncovering stories that deserve to be heard.

You’ll be confident developing ideas and commissioning contributors, supporting aspiring writers through webinars, and working with Scottish partners and communities to create engaging and authentic content. You’re well organised, collaborative, and bring experience of working with diverse contributors across geographies and backgrounds.

Job Requirements

  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to write and edit in different styles and tones, adapting for diverse audiences and platforms
  • Essential: Proven experience commissioning and editing long-form content, ideally relating to art, culture, or heritage
  • Essential: An understanding of what makes a good story
  • Essential: Understanding of audience needs and what will appeal to different audiences
  • Essential: Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple contributors and deadlines
  • Essential: Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Essential: Strong stakeholder management skills
  • Essential: Interest in art, particularly Scottish art collections and artists
  • Desirable: Proofreading and copy-editing experience or qualification
  • Desirable: Experience running workshops, ideally for aspiring writers or creatives
