Job Description

About the Republic of Consciousness

Founded in 2016, the Republic of Consciousness supports small presses across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Over the past nine years, we have awarded over £112,000 in prize money. Our Book of the Month (BoM) Club has sold more than 6,000 books from over 30 independent publishers. Given that average sales for debut literary fiction in 2019 were under 400 copies, our impact is both necessary and meaningful.

We’re now rebranding as The Small Press Fiction Prize, with exciting plans to collaborate with Queen Mary University of London for our 10th anniversary. As we grow, we’re looking for a proactive and organised Prize Administrator to support this next phase.

Role Overview

The Prize Administrator will work one day a week across five key areas:

1. Book of the Month Club Management

  • Liaise with small presses to select 12 titles annually
  • Manage and update subscriber lists
  • Coordinate monthly book mailouts (50-100 copies)
  • Grow subscriber base through social media

2. Communications and Social Media

  • Produce a monthly newsletter
  • Source content and updates from small presses
  • Manage and update prize-related content across social channels

3. Prize Submissions (July-December)

  • Encourage and process submissions from small presses
  • Maintain submission records (Google Docs)
  • Coordinate delivery of eligible books to judges

4. Fundraising

  • Support efforts to secure £10-15k annually from charitable sources (excluding Arts Council or university funding)

5. Event Coordination with Queen Mary University

  • Organise two key events: a shortlist reading (February) and the winner announcement (March)

Job Requirements

Strong administrative and organisational skills

  • Fundraising experience
  • Familiarity with the small press/publishing landscape
  • Basic knowledge of:
    • Squarespace (for website updates)
    • Excel/Google Sheets
    • Canva or similar design platforms
  • Comfortable working independently and managing varied tasks
