Senior Technician
£28,754 to £31,000 (depending on experience)
37 hours per week

Working under direction of the Technical Manager, the Senior Technician plays an important role in the realisation of our exhibitions and creative programmes. We are looking for someone with significant experience in art installation, including experience of AV installation. As part of the Programme Team, the Senior Technician will be responsible for the technical delivery of artistic projects on time and on budget, managing freelance staff and contractors where appropriate, and ensuring Health & Safety standards are met. The Senior Technician sits within the Programme Team working closely with the Production Manager & Registrar, the Technical Manager and Technical Assistant (part time).
Baltic has an outstanding reputation for producing exceptional exhibitions and Baltic’s technical team is internationally recognised for their ability to support artists and curators realise productions of considerable scale and impact.
Recent highly acclaimed exhibitions include Michael Rakowitz’ The Waiting Gardens of the North; Heather Philipson’s The Age of Love, Hew Locke’s The Procession and Franki Raffles: Photography, Activism, Campaign Works.

Reports to: Technical Manager
Salary: £28,754 to £31,000 (depending on experience)
Working hours: Full time role (37 hours per week). Monday to Friday with occasional evening and weekend work compensated with time off in-lieu – we offer a flexi time scheme.
Place of Work: Your usual place of work will be Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, South Shore Road, Gateshead NE8 3BA

Person Specification
Essential
- Relevant experience of art installation technical management
- A positive approach to team working and communication
- Experience in AV installations
- Experience in gallery lighting
- Experience in art handling
- Knowledge of joinery, fabrication and construction relevant to gallery installation
- Project management skills
- Communication and people management skills
- Proficient in SketchUp or equivalent technical drawing tool
- Interest in contemporary art or culture more broadly
- Experience of working with artists, curators or creative people
- Ability to work on several projects simultaneously, ability to respond proactively to unforeseen tasks or shifting deadlines
- Solution-focused, ability to troubleshoot complex technical problems and support others to think creatively to solve problems
- Understanding of the principles of Health & Safety at work as it applies to this role and active in maintaining best practice
- Understanding of the principles of equity
