Adventure Arts seeks a female-identifying actor for The Wizard and The Mechanic, a touring, interactive theatre production. This playful, physical, comedic role partners with the Wizard in a two-hander show, integrating community members, including individuals with learning disabilities.

Job Description

Adventure Arts Theatre Company is seeking a female-identifying actor for the role of The Mechanic in The Wizard and The Mechanic. This vibrant, comedic two-hander show tours outdoor and non-traditional spaces and integrates community collaboration. The Mechanic is the grounded, practical counterpart to the flamboyant Wizard, ensuring the story unfolds smoothly while embracing audience participation.

This role is both performance-based and community-focused. The actor will co-lead workshops with community groups, including individuals with learning disabilities, shaping aspects of the performance with them. They will also perform in both stand-alone and integrated versions of the show, assisting with setup and walkabout performances.

Rehearsals run from June to August, with performances scheduled through 2025. The role offers a base fee of £5,100, with potential for additional performance days. Adventure Arts welcomes applications from the global majority and underrepresented artists and encourages performers with experience in clowning, physical theatre, improvisation, puppetry, and mask work to apply.

  • Rehearsals (Mon-Fri) at Horse + Bamboo: 14th July – 1st August 2024

  • Premier Performance at Tameside Theatre in the Park: 2nd August 2024

  • Stand-alone Show at Smithalls Hall: 6th August 2024

  • Stand-alone Show at The Whitaker: 14th August 2024

  • Integrated Show at Rochdale Side by Side Festival: 21st August 2024

  • Integrated Show at Redwood Secondary School: September 2024 (date TBC)

  • Integrated Show at Ferney Lee Primary School: October 2025 (2 show days, 1 engagement day)

  • Integrated Show at Horse + Bamboo: 1st November 2025 (includes October engagement session, date TBC)

Job Requirements

Essential Skills:

  • Improvisation and physical comedy

  • Storytelling and audience interaction

  • Movement-based performance (mask, puppetry, dance, acrobatics)

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in mask work and puppetry

  • Community engagement experience

  • Working with children, SEN students, or adults with learning disabilities
